OKLAHOMA CAPITOL -- The Oklahoma Department of Human Services (OKDHS) today issued it’s 2011 Annual Report, and cited several Oklahomans for overcoming obstacles and finding success through OKDHS programs.
The report, entitled “Hope for Oklahoma,” featured Oklahoma City resident Cassandra Pittmon, an OKDHS client who with hard work and determination became one of 2011’s brightest success stories.
“Nobody wants to see themselves in a place where they have to go to the local DHS office and go through the process of finding help with food stamps, daycare, medical, things like that,” Pittmon said. “But I knew I had to do what’s best for me and my children. I made the conscious decision to start a ladder of goals.”
That ladder meant reaching out for help, and OKDHS was there to support her. In just a couple of weeks, Pittmon had applied for help and received SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly “food stamps,”) as well as TANF (Temporary Assistance to Needy Families), as well as Medicaid for her children. She also found herself at Rose State College on the fast-track to a solid education.
Today Pittmon works for Oklahoma City’s YWCA in a job she says she loves, and looks forward to each new day. She goes back to Rose State College when she can and talks to others who may need a bit of inspiration.
“My life is pretty awesome,” Pittmon said. “I thank God every day for the ability to wake up, love my children and provide for them. I have a nice house, a nice car…I can’t complain. DHS was there when I needed them and I feel very blessed.”
Through the 2011 Annual Report, see how Oklahomans were served by the OKDHS. As the OKDHS enters into its 75th year, the agency’s mission has not changed: to help Oklahoma’s families lead safer, healthier and more productive lives.
A video documentary introduces a few of those Oklahomans and tells how OKDHS is serving greater numbers of families and individuals than ever before.
