OKLAHOMA CAPITOL --  A one-day workshop educating the public on ways to help low-income families is coming to Northeastern Oklahoma.  “Bridges Out of Poverty: Strategies for Professionals and Communities” will be held Thursday, Dec. 8, at NewSong Church, 61980 E. 353 Road in Grove. (NewSong Church is five miles east of Grove on the right side of Highway 59.  The church site is marked by signage on Highway 59, but the facility is located at the back of the property.) The event will be from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., with check-in beginning at 8:30 a.m.

This workshop will be presented along with preliminary information on “Getting Ahead in a Just-Getting-By World,” and the National Circles Campaign.

“The Bridges Out of Poverty training increases understanding of hidden barriers to success, and provides possible solutions for improved outcomes,” said Deborah Price, Manager of the Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives Bridges Campaign. “We plan to continue this training across the state, and make concerted efforts to alleviate poverty in each community.”

This workshop is for business, education, law enforcement, health care and social service providers, churches, faith-based and community organizations, as well as individuals who are interested in helping low-income families in Delaware County.

“We will educate the public about why ‘middle class’ solutions to poverty don’t work,” Price said. “We will provide the participants with case studies, detailed analyses, charts, exercises and real solutions to problems that exist with low-income families and individuals.”

Registration is $27 and $15 for “Bridges” alumni.  Space is limited to 150, so applicants are urged to register as soon as possible at http://www.bridges.okreentry.org Registration will be closed when all slots are full.

The Oklahoma Department of Human Services (www.okdhs.org) and the Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives http://www.faithlinksok.org are event sponsors.  For additional information, contact Delaware County Coordinator Nancy Edwards via email at delbridgesok@gmail.com
