Oklahoma Capitol -- The Oklahoma Department of Human Services (OKDHS) will host the 2011 Native American Heritage Celebration Monday, Nov. 21 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Langston University-Oklahoma City campus, 4205 N. Lincoln Blvd.
This year’s theme is “Giving Life to our Native American History.”
“Oklahoma is home to 39 different tribes, each with their own unique lifestyle,” said Wilson Seawright, Celebration Committee chairman. “Native Americans had no written language. History and legend has been passed down via storytelling for generations in Native American households. We are pleased to have an expert from the Jacobson House in Norman share with us the art of beautiful storytelling.”
Also featured will be colorful Native American attire and regalia of various tribes, from ribbon shirts to buckskin. Traditional and contemporary music will be played, and Native American history will come to life in photos from the past.
The celebration is free and open to the public. The OKDHS Native American Heritage Celebration Committee’s mission is to educate, appreciate and promote the contributions of the culture, arts and heritage of Oklahoma’s Native American population.
