OKLAHOMA CITY -- A free training opportunity will be available in 2012 for individuals who would like to volunteer and become community advocates for Oklahoma's aging population. The Oklahoma Aging Advocacy Leadership Academy (OAALA) identifies, trains and develops volunteer leaders and advocates in issues related to aging.

"Graduates from the academy become committed leaders to successfully advocate for Oklahoma’s aging population," said Judy Leitner, OAALA program director.

Persons interested in attending the academy must complete and submit an application by Dec. 31, 2011. Applications may be obtained by phoning Leitner at (405) 752-1257 or the Oklahoma Department of Human Services (OKDHS) Aging Services Division at (405) 521-2281.

“Successful applicants should demonstrate a willingness to use constructive advocacy techniques to effect social change, sensitivity to the needs of people, an ability to see things from others’ point of view and a commitment to building communities that include and value all older persons and persons with disabilities,” Leitner said.

Academy classes are held at the OKDHS Aging Services Division office in Shepherd Mall in Oklahoma City. The academy is tentatively set to begin in Feb. 2012 and consists of 10 two-day sessions over a one-year period. The sessions are held Friday evening through the following Saturday.

Overnight accommodations are available and travel reimbursement may be provided under the state travel reimbursement act. Meals, snacks, text books and resource materials are provided by the academy and there are no tuition fees. However, participants should plan to complete the entire 10-month course.

The academy is sponsored by the OKDHS Aging Services Division and is funded in part by the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma.  For more information about the academy, contact Leitner at (405) 752-1257.
