OKLAHOMA CAPITOL -- Homelessness is a very real challenge for area families and the children without a place to call home. The Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives has partnered with Cornerstone Assistance Network to help make a difference in those children’s lives.
“Women and children make up 52 percent of the homeless population nationally and Oklahoma ranks 47th for risk of childhood homelessness” said Robin Jones, Director of the Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives. “It is overwhelmingly sad to look into the eyes of these children and not see a glimmer of hope.”

This month, the two groups hosting the public awareness campaign, Season of Service, are focusing on homeless children. Congregations in central Oklahoma are being asked to focus on homelessness during the last weekend in June.

“Change happens one act of service at a time,” says Jones. “It is amazing to think that one adult can literally change the world of at least one child, that we can help them overcome the barriers so they don’t repeat the generational cycle of homelessness.”

Season of Service lasts through August and focuses on four different issues related to children in central Oklahoma. For ways to help, go to go to http://www.serveokc.org/ (Link opens in new window) for a list of needs and specific ways to get involved.
