OKLAHOMA CAPITOL -- An art contest aimed at raising foster care awareness that asks children to create a “masterpiece” showing what family life means to them is getting the help of Oklahoma City Thunder forward Desmond Mason, Oklahoma Department of Human Services officials said Thursday.
Mason, who majored in studio art at Oklahoma State University, will be keynote speaker at the May 1 ceremonies at City Arts Center in which contest winners will be announced. He also will hold a special session with shelter and foster children before the event.

"Creating art is my passion,” Mason said. “My artwork is a collection of experiences, knowledge and feelings. I create things based on how I feel at any given time,” Mason said.

“Creating something that's unique and different is the goal for every art piece I do, I'm captivated by taking normal everyday things, dissecting them and turning them into abstract artwork.”

Mason's artwork has been displayed in the National Basketball Association store in New York City and several other galleries.
Entries for this art contest are being accepted until March 31. All entries will be featured in an exhibit in Oklahoma City at City Arts Center in May.
