Shawnee Resident Spencer Recognized for Volunteerism

OKLAHOMA CAPITOL--- The Oklahoma Department of Human Services Office of Volunteerism recently recognized a Shawnee resident at the State Volunteer Awards Ceremony in Oklahoma City at the Langston University-Oklahoma City campus. 

James “Jim” Spencer was honored during the ceremony as an exceptional individual whose volunteer service has had a significant impact on individuals or a community. 
 
Spencer has worked tirelessly to support the aging community. In 2008, he contributed 558 hours of his time to benefit older Oklahomans by counseling seniors to help them understand complicated insurance matters, serving as a member of the local Area Agency on Aging, serving three two-year terms as a Silver-Haired Legislator, participating in caregiver support groups at the local adult day care program, volunteering for the Shawnee Asset Building Alliance, serving as an active member of the State Council on Aging and volunteering for the American Association of Retired Persons.

If averaged over 12 months, Spencer’s volunteer hours would equate to 46.5 hours per month. Spencer and his wife, Joyce, are Shawnee residents.

Gov. Brad Henry’s Cabinet Secretary for Human Services, OKDHS Director Howard H. Hendrick, presented the awards and congratulated the honorees.

The theme, Volunteers Create Magic, was displayed throughout the room as each recipient was awarded a trophy and a commendation from the state legislature.  A reception followed the ceremony.
