OKLAHOMA CAPITOL--- The Oklahoma Department of Human Services Office of Volunteerism recently recognized an Okemah resident at the State Volunteer Awards Ceremony in Oklahoma City at the Langston University-Oklahoma City campus.
Vicky Landers was honored during the ceremony as an exceptional individual whose volunteer service has had a significant impact on individuals or a community.
Landers largely grew up in the state’s foster care system so she understands the needs of the children in foster care better than most. As a foster parent and child welfare services aide since 2003, she has drawn upon that experience to launch several community projects to benefit Okfuskee County children. She has organized an annual Christmas gift drive through fundraising, collection and distribution and has brought together many faith-based organizations to provide decorations and refreshments for foster family parties and OKDHS events.
Landers is already organizing community partners to help provide back to school supplies, Halloween costumes and prom attire for underprivileged youth. She is a tireless advocate for children and a mother to nine children, five of whom she and her husband, Anthony, adopted after fostering for many years.
Gov. Brad Henry’s Cabinet Secretary for Human Services, OKDHS Director Howard H. Hendrick, presented the awards and congratulated the honorees.
The theme, Volunteers Create Magic, was displayed throughout the room as each recipient was awarded a trophy and a commendation from the state legislature. A reception followed the ceremony.
