OKLAHOMA CAPITOL---The Oklahoma Department of Human Services Office of Volunteerism recently recognized a Wewoka resident at the State Volunteer Recognition Ceremony in Oklahoma City at the Langston University-Oklahoma City campus.
Receiving the Freida Mosley Award for Outstanding Service was Peggy Ellwanger. The Mosley Award is named for a longtime Children’s Hospital employee who set an unparalleled example of service to others for 34 years and is presented to an OKDHS employee for outstanding work in the community on behalf of clients. The recognition ceremony honored exceptional individuals and organizations that provide volunteer service whose work has had a significant impact on individuals or a community.
In her 15-year OKDHS career, Ellwanger has supported the agency’s clients beyond the scope of state and federal services. She helps to administer community support that assists OKDHS clients above and beyond traditional forms of assistance. Ellwanger is a member of the SEMCO employee council, raising funds for community projects and to boost employee morale.
She is a member of the Oklahoma Municipal League, only the second woman to serve as president of the Wewoka Chamber of Commerce and was Citizen of the Year in 1988. Ellwanger has lent her support to the Seminole Nation Museum and the Wewoka Community Christmas Dinner. She has served in leadership positions within the Wewoka High School Band Boosters, Wewoka Country Club and the United Wewoka Merchants Association.
Gov. Brad Henry’s Cabinet Secretary for Human Services, OKDHS Director Howard H. Hendrick, presented the awards and congratulated the honorees.
The theme, Volunteers Create Magic, was displayed throughout the room as each recipient was awarded a trophy and a commendation from the state legislature. A reception followed the ceremony.
