OKLAHOMA CAPITOL -- Paul Amato, Ph.D., will open a dialog on how divorce affects children at noon, Dec. 8 in the Chesapeake Room, Oklahoma History Center, Oklahoma City.
Amato is a Professor of Sociology, Demography, and Family Studies at Pennsylvania State University. Amato’s research interests include marital quality, the causes and consequences of divorce, and subjective well-being over the life course. Amato has published more than 100 journal articles and book chapters along with four books, including “A Generation at Risk: Growing Up in An Era of Family Upheaval”, which was published by Harvard University Press in 1997.
Amato will examine recent research from the fields of sociology, psychology, demography, and economics. Topics will include changes in the rate of divorce, genetic influences on divorce, variations in children's reactions to divorce, informal versus formal divorces, and changes in law and social policy.
Most recently Amato was recognized with the Distinguished Career Award by the Family Section of the American Sociological Association in 2006. Amato received the Stanley Cohen Distinguished Research Award from the American Association of Family and Conciliation Courts in 2002, and the Distinction in the Social Sciences Award from Pennsylvania State University in 2003. Amato received the Reuben Hill Award from the National Council on Family Relations for the best published article on the family in 1993, 1999, and 2001.
The Practice and Policy Lecture Series is sponsored by the Oklahoma Department of Human Services and the University of Oklahoma Center for Public Management. The yearlong series provides thought-provoking presentations by experts in their fields on Oklahoma’s emerging policy issues, trends and best practices. The lectures are free and open to the public.
