OKLAHOMA CAPITOL -- Oklahomans facing high heating costs this winter and are eligible for a federal Low-Income Home Heating Assistance Program have more time to apply for the assistance program.
The LIHEAP application period was scheduled to close Dec. 19. However the Oklahoma Department of Human Services is extending enrollment to use $3.5 million in program funding. OKDHS staff will be accepting applications at least through the end of the year.
“We received more money this year for the program and we know there are people who need help that we haven’t heard from yet,” said Cari Crittenden, OKDHS LIHEAP coordinator. “If people think they may be eligible for assistance during this season, we encourage them to contact our office.”
Crittenden said 84,000 applications had been approved by the original deadline.
Individuals can apply at their local Human Services Center and must provide household income information and their latest heating utility bill. Crittenden said verification of Social Security numbers for all household members and citizenship verification also must be provided.
