OKLAHOMA CAPITOL -- Applications for the federal Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program have increased about 8 percent over applications received in the same time period last year. The application period was originally scheduled to close Friday, Dec. 19, however administrators are considering the possibility of extending the application period.
At the close of business Dec. 12, the Oklahoma Department of Human Services has received 77,000 LIHEAP applications. Last year during the first two weeks of the application period about 70,500 applications were received.

Funding for winter heating assistance in Oklahoma is projected at $18 million. Almost 80,000 households received heating assistance last year totaling about $9 million.

Cari Crittenden, OKDHS LIHEAP coordinator said many households that receive Food Stamps, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, or state supplemental payments to the aged, blind or disabled, may have been notified of their eligibility.

Households usually pre-approved should make application at their local OKDHS office if they recently moved or didn’t receive a pre-approval notice.

Crittenden said other low-income households may be eligible for the program and should contact their local OKDHS office for an application. The LIHEAP application period closes 5 p.m. Friday.

Maximum income guidelines for the program are:
