OKLAHOMA CAPITOL -- A team of more than 100 Oklahoma Department of Human Services volunteers was honored Tuesday for working at the Oklahoma City Evacuee Support Shelter during Hurricane Gustav, helping more than 1,700 Louisiana and Texas Gulf Coast residents who voluntarily evacuated in September.
The volunteers were recognized by the Oklahoma Commission for Human Services Commissioners and OKDHS Director Howard Hendrick during a ceremony held in the Capitol Complex.
Volunteers helped set up the shelter at the old Lucent Plant building in West Oklahoma City and filled gaps where services were needed – everything from routine social services to handing out cots to emptying trash barrels. Some worked in check-in or check-out lines while others set up tables and chairs or swept the floor at the at the site. All acted as Good Neighbors to the evacuees.
Adult Protective Services and Child Welfare workers were on site throughout the five days of the evacuation, investigating reports of neglect and circulating through the dormitory environment to serve clients who needed assistance. Aging Services Division brought in personal care providers to help the disabled guests with bathing and personal hygiene needs.
