OKLAHOMA CAPITOL -- A team of 17 Family Support volunteers from the Oklahoma Department of Human Services honored for helping process applications for Disaster Food Assistance in Louisiana after hurricanes Gustav and Ike.
The volunteers were recognized Tuesday by the Oklahoma Commission for Human Services Commissioners and OKDHS Director Howard Hendrick during a ceremony held in the Capitol Complex.
Long power outages after the storms caused people to lose all the food in their refrigerators and freezers.
The Oklahoma team worked with volunteers from Louisiana, Kansas and Nebraska in helping in disaster areas that included 43 parishes during the two September hurricanes. Volunteers processed more than 6,000 disaster food stamp applications over six days at one of the locations in St. Bernard Parish.
The team was stationed in New Orleans and travelled to several other parishes during the two week stay.
Members of the team are:
