OKLAHOMA CAPITOL -- Oklahoma’s seniors and senior advocates will meet at the state capitol Monday, April 14, to discuss the needs of the growing number of older adults.
Senior Day at the capitol participants may talk to their legislators about the impact that cuts in state funding has on programs providing services to the elderly population. Participants will be making a call for action by the Oklahoma Legislature to better address their needs. Census data indicates that between the years 2000 to 2015, the population of those over age 65 is expected to grow at nearly three times the rate of the overall population.

The Oklahoma Association of Senior Centers will host a rally. Exhibits will be on display on the fourth floor rotunda. Scheduled speakers include Secretary of State Susan Savage; Nancy Coffer, state director, AARP; and Lance Robertson, director, Oklahoma Department of Human Services (OKDHS) Aging Services Division (ASD). The program begins at 9 a.m. in the chambers of House of Representatives.

Sponsors for the event, which has been held each year for more than 20 years, include AARP, the Oklahoma Association of Homes and Services for the Aging, Oklahoma State Council on Aging, Oklahoma Alliance on Aging, Oklahoma Retired Educators Association, Oklahoma Association of Area Agencies on Aging and OKDHS Aging Services Division.
