OKLAHOMA CAPITOL --- The Oklahoma Department of Human Services Division Aging Services Division seeks entries for the annual Older Oklahoman Poetry Contest. The contest is a popular event held in conjunction with Oklahoma’s celebration of May as Older Americans Month.
Contestants must be age 60 or older and be a resident of Oklahoma. All poetry must be original, and each contestant may submit no more than one poem. Entries must be received no later than December 31, 2005. Send entries to OKDHS, Aging Services Division, 2401 NW 23, Suite 40, Oklahoma City, OK 73107, attention Sheila Garner, Community Relations Unit. Poems received after the deadline will not be considered.

Submit the entry on a single sheet of paper and include the title of the poem, the poet’s name and age, gender, the mailing address, including the zip code and the telephone number and area code.

Because all appropriate entries will be published in a booklet that will be distributed during the Oklahoma Conference on Aging, no exceptions to the deadline will be made.

Contest winners will be notified by mid-March 2006, so that they may attend the conference and be recognized during a ceremony held on Senior Day, Wednesday, May 3, 2006. All older Oklahomans are invited to participate in Senior Day activities free of charge.

The authors of winning poetry will be invited to read their poems during the award ceremony.

For more information, contact the local area agency on aging by calling the Senior Info-Line at 1-800-211-2116 or by calling Sheila Garner at (405) 522-6239.
