OKLAHOMA CAPITOL --- Sherwana Gathers, a 13-year Oklahoma Department of Human Services veteran, has been named the new Custer-Dewey County Director. She replaces Kay Hagerman who was named the OKDHS Benefits Services Manager in October 2004.
“Sherwana will provide excellent leadership for Custer and Dewey counties,” Area I Director Brenda Hawkins said. “We look forward to working with her in her new role as county director and part of the Area I team.”
Gathers started with OKDHS as a social worker in Custer County. She also spent time with the Department in Custer, Dewey and Washita counties. She became a family support supervisor in 2001.
“I am excited about the opportunities and challenges of working with the people that OKDHS serves in Dewey and Custer counties,” Gathers said. “I can only hope to do my job as well as my predecessor.”
Gathers received her Bachelor’s Degree in sociology with a concentration in social work from Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) in Weatherford. Gathers later completed her Master of Education in agency counseling at SWOSU. She is also a licensed professional counselor.
Gathers, a native of Woodward, and her husband, Terry, have been married for 24 years. They have a daughter, Marissa, 15, and a son, Chantz, 11. They currently reside in Weatherford and are very proud and active members of Pine Acres Church.
