TAHLEQUAH --- Mary Carlson of Tahlequah received a commendation from Gov. Brad Henry on Nov. 8 at the 20th Annual Governor’s Disability Employment Awards ceremony held at the Governor’s Mansion in Oklahoma City.
Carlson was recognized in the employee category for her outstanding achievements in employment. The awards program stated this about Carlson:

“Mary Carlson is a home health aide and has worked for the same patient for the past five years. She is a very caring and devoted aide. Each day she cooks breakfast for her patient, cleans his home and takes care of his laundry. Mary takes great pride in the fact that she is helping another person to live in his own home and not have to move to a nursing home. In her spare time, she volunteers at three different agencies that help the people in need and in crisis. Mary is always looking at ways to improve her skills and her service agency, Bios, is always looking at how they can support her. Mary has completed courses in home and commercial services and is now working on her GED.”

The Governor’s Disability Employment Awards are held each year to honor outstanding persons with disabilities who have made achievements in employment. The awards also honor businesses that hire persons with disabilities and enable them to succeed.

The awards are co-sponsored by state organizations that support people with disabilities in finding and maintaining employment. They are the Oklahoma Department of Human Services Developmental Disabilities Services Division; the Oklahoma Department of Rehabilitation Services, the Oklahoma Association of Persons in Supported Employment and the Office of Handicapped Concerns.
