NORMAN --- The Couch Cafeteria at the University of Oklahoma was presented with a commendation from Gov. Brad Henry on Nov. 8 at the 20th Annual Governor’s Disability Employment Awards ceremony held at the Governor’s Mansion in Oklahoma City.
Couch Cafeteria was recognized in the business category for hiring persons with disabilities and helping them to succeed. The awards program stated this:
“Since 1988, the Couch Cafeteria at the University of Oklahoma has employed 30 individuals through the Thunderbird Clubhouse Transitional Employment Program. Management allows Thunderbird to place clubhouse members for six to nine months to gain work experience and to build their confidence. At the end of their transitional placement, members have the opportunity to become permanent employees if they choose. To date, eight of the members have decided to continue their employment. Cafeteria supervisors have been very understanding when employees have difficulties with medications or behaviors and need some time off. They also call Thunderbird whenever there is a job opening and offer the position to their members first. Thanks to their inclusive attitudes, the supervisors and employees at Couch Cafeteria have made a positive impact on more than 30 individual’s lives.”
The Governor’s Disability Employment Awards are held each year to honor outstanding persons with disabilities who are working successfully in their communities. The awards also recognize businesses that hire persons with disabilities and help them to succeed.
The awards are co-sponsored by state organizations that support people with disabilities in finding and maintaining employment. They are the Oklahoma Department of Human Services Developmental Disabilities Services Division; the Oklahoma Department of Rehabilitation Services, the Oklahoma Association of Persons in Supported Employment and the Office of Handicapped Concerns.
