CHECOTAH -- Nichol’s Dollar Saver Grocery Store in Checotah was presented a commendation from Gov. Brad Henry on Nov. 8 at the 20th Annual Governor’s Disability Employment Awards ceremony held at the Governor’s Mansion in Oklahoma City.
Nichol’s Dollar Saver was recognized in the business category for hiring persons with disabilities and helping them to succeed. The awards program stated this:
“For the past 16 years, Nichol’s Dollar Saver Grocery stores have worked with the Supported Employment Program at Options Inc. Over the years, they have employed eight individuals through this program in their Checotah and Eufaula stores. The owner, Gary Nichols, and his managers work to accommodate jobs and schedules to fit the employees’ needs and skills. They have also served as a resource by encouraging other employers to provide opportunities for people with developmental disabilities. Gary and his employees have not only opened their business, but their hearts as well, and have made a positive impact on each of the people who have worked for them.”
The Governor’s Disability Employment Awards are held each year to honor outstanding persons with disabilities who are working successfully in their communities. The awards also recognize businesses that hire persons with disabilities and help them to succeed.
The awards are co-sponsored by state organizations that support people with disabilities in finding and maintaining employment. They are the Oklahoma Department of Human Services Developmental Disabilities Services Division; the Oklahoma Department of Rehabilitation Services, the Oklahoma Association of Persons in Supported Employment and the Office of Handicapped Concerns.
