EDMOND -- Douglas Morris of Edmond received a commendation from Gov. Brad Henry Nov. 8 at the 20th Annual Governor’s Disability Employment Awards ceremony held at the Governor’s Mansion in Oklahoma City.
Morris was recognized in the employee category for his outstanding achievements in employment. The awards program stated this about Morris:
“Doug Morris has been working for the past three years as a cart pusher for a Wal-Mart store in Edmond. When Doug first started this job, he had very little previous work history. He had lived a very sheltered life at home with his parents and had very little community involvement. His mother took care of all of his needs and told him everything he needed to do on a daily basis. After her death, Doug had to face life’s reality and learn to take care of himself. Thanks to the Supported Employment Program at Francis Tuttle Technology Center, he was able to find a job and learn the skills he needed to become successful. He has become one of the most dependable employees at this Wal-Mart and has earned several pay raises. Doug is now living in his own apartment and taking care of his day-to-day needs. He is proud of his income and his new home. Doug has made many new friends through his experiences and has become much more active in his community. He now gives back to his community by volunteering each week at the Edmond Hope Center.”
The Governor’s Disability Employment Awards are held each year to honor outstanding persons with disabilities who are working successfully in their communities. The awards also recognize businesses that hire persons with disabilities and help them to succeed.
The awards are co-sponsored by state organizations that support people with disabilities in finding and maintaining employment. They are the Oklahoma Department of Human Services Developmental Disabilities Services Division; the Oklahoma Department of Rehabilitation Services, the Oklahoma Association of Persons in Supported Employment and the Office of Handicapped Concerns.
