OKLAHOMA CAPITOL -- The Oklahoma Department of Human Services’ Substance Abuse Services will hold an Executive Leadership Institute with registration beginning at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 26, and from 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 27, at the Reed Center, located at 5800 Will Rogers Road in Midwest City.
The conference, offered in conjunction with the Center for Nonprofits and the University of Oklahoma Center for Public Management, is a two-day workshop designed for the executive directors and board members of various Oklahoma substance abuse agencies. Kyle McGraw, director of Substance Abuse Programs, OKDHS, said the primary goal of the Executive Directors Leadership Institute is to improve treatment outcomes through focusing on training specifically designed for treatment center executives and board members.

“If we are wanting outstanding treatment centers in Oklahoma that are producing quality results we must start at the top with our executives and directors of our treatment facilities,” McGraw said. “Improving their skills will produce better results.”

The workshop will offer sessions on Strategic Planning, Business Strategy, Leadership, Grant writing, Financial Management and Board Roles and Responsibilities. Presenters include Charles Ashley, Stephanie Arnold de Verges, Jim Durbin, Ken Busby, Monica Swink and Lynn Kickingbird. Breakout presenters are experts in their fields and serve as adjunct consultants for the Center for Nonprofits.

A special dinner scheduled from 6:30 p.m. –8 p.m. Wednesday, May 26, in Ballroom C at the Reed Center, will feature renowned speaker Father Leo Booth. He is an internationally acclaimed author, lecturer and trainer on all aspects of spirituality and recovery. Father Booth is a Certified Addictions Counselor and a Certified Eating Disorders Counselor who has appeared on national television on such shows as “Oprah,” “Geraldo,” “Sally Jesse Raphael” and more.

The luncheon keynote speaker John Lucas II, a former San Antonio Spurs head coach and past player for the Houston Rockets, will speak from noon to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, May 27, in Ballroom C at the Reed Center. Following his retirement in 1990, Lucas founded the Houston-based John Lucas Enterprises. The company runs a number of drug-treatment programs and other endeavors that help athletes and others maintain their sobriety and work to improve their quality of life.

The Executive Leadership Institute is part of the Center for Nonprofit’s Center Consulting Network niche programming.
