OKLAHOMA CAPITOL --- Oklahoma Department of Human Services Director Howard H. Hendrick presented Jan Van Horn, an Adult Protective Services Specialist in Oklahoma County, with the OKDHS Director’s Award during the Oklahoma Commission for Human Services’ Dec. 2 meeting in Oklahoma City.
Van Horn was honored for her determination and perseverance in aiding law enforcement with several financial exploitation cases. One of which has led to an arrest and the recovery of some of the victim’s assets. According to her co-workers, Van Horn’s “never-give-up” attitude and genuine compassion for people are the hallmark of her long career in Adult Protective Services.
“I’m honored to present the OKDHS Director’s Award to Jan Van Horn,” said Hendrick. “I’m proud that people like Jan have taken on this mission. She’s one of many who are leading the way in protecting our elderly and disabled citizens.”
Adult Protective Services has expanded along with the rapidly growing elderly population in Oklahoma. And as the baby boomer generation gets older and begins to rely more on health and community resources, Adult Protective Services staff will be faced with an ever-increasing challenge of making sure they are safe and healthy.
In fiscal year 2003, OKDHS Adult Protective Services staff confirmed 9,758 reports of adult abuse in Oklahoma. Thirteen percent of these cases dealt with financial exploitation.
