Oklahoma Capitol --A Department of Human Services employee in Tulsa was honored at the February meeting of the Oklahoma Commission for Human Services for his commitment to serving persons with developmental disabilities.
Steve Pitts was presented a Director’s Award by OKDHS Director Howard H. Hendrick at the Commission meeting in Oklahoma City February 22.

Pitts is a recreational therapist in the Area II office of the OKDHS Developmental Disabilities Services Division. He has been an employee of OKDHS for 10 years.

Joanne Goin, Area II Manager, nominated Pitts for commitment in his daily work of developing recreational opportunities for more than 1,000 persons with developmental disabilities. Goin said Pitts had recently completed arrangements with American Theater Company to donate proceeds of one performance to the Area II Project Elf, which purchases Christmas gifts for persons with developmental disabilities who otherwise might not receive gifts.

Douglas Fulton, executive director of Independent Opportunities, Inc., a contract provider of services to persons with developmental disabilities, wrote to Director Hendrick to express the staff’s appreciation for Pitt’s dependability, positive attitude and dedication.

Fulton said none of the staff could remember "attending any sports or recreation event, whether sponsored by DDSD, Special Olympics, People First, Independent Opportunities or other residential service provider agencies, at which Steve Pitts was not present and involved."

He said, "Day or evening, weekday or weekend, Mr. Pitts is there."

"Mr. Pitts is a tireless advocate for persons with developmental disabilities," Fulton said.
