I-40 lanes narrow, shift at Choctaw Rd. through earlySeptember

Westbound and eastboundI-40 lanes are narrowed and shiftedbetweenChoctaw Rd. (mm 166) and I-240 through early September for ongoing construction work. Motorists are advised to use caution in the area and to expect delays during peak commute times.

About the Project

• The I-40 and Choctaw Road interchange (mm 165-167)will be reconstructed from a partial clover leaf interchange to a full diamond interchange.
  
  
• I-40 will be widened to six lanes plus auxiliary lanes from the I-240 junction to Peebly Rd. (mm 169).
  
  
• Additionally, Choctaw Rd. will be widened to four lanes between S.E. 78th St. and S.E. 71st St. The Choctaw Rd. ramps to I-40 will be signalized and have dedicated right and left turn lanes added.
  
  
• The project went to bid in September 2017 and went before the Oklahoma Transportation Commission in October 2017 for consideration.
  
  
• The up to $75 million contract was awarded to Duit Construction Co. Inc. of Edmond.
  
  
• Work began in January 2018 and is expected to take more than two years to complete.
  
  
• An average of 56,000 vehicles per day travel this area.

Driving Information

• Drivers can expect two lanes open to traffic on eastbound and westbound I-40, however, there will be work occurring during nights and weekends that may narrow I-40to one lane in each direction intermittently.
  
  
• Speed limit will be reduced through the construction zone.
  
  
• Motorists could use SH-102 to US-62 or SH-102 to SH-9 as alternative routes into and out of the Oklahoma City metro area.

• Eastbound and westbound I-40 also will be reconstructed and widened to six lanes from Peebly Rd. (mm 169) east to the Oklahoma and Pottawatomie county line (mm173) in two projects:
  
  
  • In 2017, the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority awarded the Northeast OK County Loop turnpike project that will link I-40 and I-44 (Turner Turnpike). This $44 million interchange project includes the widening of I-40 to six lanes from just east of Peebly Rd. (mm 169) to just east of Luther Rd. (mm 171) where the new turnpike interchange will link to I-40. ODOT will participate in the construction cost at about $16 million. Learn more about this project here.
    
    
  • In FFY 2021, ODOT plans to widen I-40 from just east of Luther Rd. (mm 171) to just east of Harrah-Newalla Rd. (mm 173) — estimated $32 million.
