Tulsa Community Comes Together to Strengthen Care Through Spiritual First Aid

What happens when people who care deeply about their communities come together with a shared desire to be better equipped to help others?

That was on display in Tulsa as the Oklahoma Office of Faith-Based & Community Initiatives (OFBCI), in partnership with the Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH), hosted a Spiritual First Aid™ training for local clery, pastors, community leaders, volunteers, and other everyday helpers.

Hosted by Jenks Methodist Church, the training created a welcoming space for participants to learn practical ways to provide spiritual and emotional care to people experiencing crisis, trauma, or difficult seasons of life.

Spiritual First Aid is a biblically informed, evidence-informed, and trauma-informed training that equips everyday helpers to respond with compassion, listen well, recognize signs of distress, and connect individuals with appropriate support and resources.

But the impact of the day went beyond the training itself. Participants represented different churches, organizations, and areas of the community, creating opportunities to build relationships and strengthen the network of people prepared to walk alongside others when they need help most.

OFBCI is grateful to OSDH for its partnership and commitment to equipping Oklahoma communities, and to Jenks Methodist Church for graciously hosting the training and opening its doors to community partners.

Most of all, we are thankful for everyone who gave their time to participate and grow their ability to serve others. Their willingness to learn, connect, and step into the role of a caring neighbor is an important part of building healthier, more compassionate communities across Oklahoma.
