“Readiness is about more than aircraft, facilities, and equipment. People have to be ready too.”
That statement from Wing Chaplain Andy Peck captured the heart of a recent Clergy Day at Tinker Air Force Base, where more than 100 clergy and community leaders gathered to learn more about the people, mission, and opportunities for partnership surrounding one of Oklahoma’s largest military installations.
The Oklahoma Office of Faith-Based & Community Initiatives (OFBCI) was honored to participate in the event hosted by the Tinker Air Force Base Chapel.
During the gathering, Base Commander Col. Cisco Harris shared the significant impact Tinker has throughout Oklahoma. Tinker’s workforce reaches into 52 Oklahoma counties, with nearly 27,000 people serving or working on the installation. That number continues to grow. The installation also has the unique responsibility of supporting both Air Force and Navy missions.
The importance of supporting Oklahoma’s military community extends well beyond the installation. Event participants also heard that approximately one in eight Oklahomans has either served or is currently serving in the military, demonstrating the significant connection between military service and communities across the state.
The day also featured keynote speaker Dr. Nick Hamilton, who shared insights about spiritual recovery from trauma and the important role meaningful relationships and community support can play in the lives of those who have experienced difficult circumstances.
One of the most important conversations of the day focused on the many opportunities available for churches, nonprofits, and community organizations to partner with the Tinker Air Force Base Chapel team as they serve airmen, sailors, civilians, and their families.
Many organizations may already have programs, resources, ministries, or areas of expertise that could provide meaningful support to members of the Tinker community. Building awareness of those resources and connecting the right partners can help strengthen the network of support available to military members and their families.
