During my thirty-four years of law enforcement service, I have been involved in a variety of life- threatening incidents. These include high-speed collisions, shootings and a variety of other critical incidents. These incidents caused me to have emotional issues for a long period of time. I was eventually able to deal with the emotional stress through my faith in God. These situations made me realize the importance of mental health awareness. However, I was not prepared for the emotional trauma I encountered after receiving word that my son, who is also an Oklahoma Highway Patrolman, was involved in a deadly shootout with an armed suspect. Through the support that he received from the OKFRWD, it made me realize the importance of being a part of this team. Because of these situations, I realize the need for support to all officers and first responders that have been traumatized by critical incidents.
