Major Ty Owen

Major Ty Owen began his career in law enforcement with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol’s 53rd academy in 2001. His early assignments included patrol, Special Operations, and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 2014, Captain in 2022, and Major in 2026.

Owen, a 1992 graduate of Stigler High School, completed his Bachelor of Business Administration from Northeastern State University in 1996. Before joining the patrol, Owen worked in banking as a commercial and consumer loan officer.

After the OHP academy, Owen had two different patrol assignments: Cimmaron Turnpike and Troop C/Sequoyah County. Owen was then assigned to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol’s Special Operations Troop from 2005 – 2014 as a K-9 handler. Owen became involved in Commercial Vehicle Enforcement in 2011 where he focused on criminal interdiction and conducted roadside safety inspections.

Owen spent 2014-2022 as a Lieutenant in the Oklahoma Highway Patrol’s Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Troop and then promoted to Captain as the Executive Officer. Owen moved to Special Projects in 2022 where he oversaw the finance and construction of new headquarters around the state along with the new Tactical Training Facility. From2025-2026, Owen was given an additional duty assignment taking command of the Office of Professional Standards.

Major Owen taught criminal interdiction for almost two decades and holds memberships in multiple law enforcement and professional organizations including FBI LEEDA and the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP). He still maintains his FMCSA certifications to conduct commercial vehicle safety inspections.
