Traditional vs Lateral Academy

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol runs two types of academies - traditional and lateral.

The traditional academy is for applicants with or without law enforcement experience. Anyone who meets the basic requirements and does not have any automatic disqualifiers can apply. A traditional academy is longer in format due to the additional training required.

The lateral academy is for applicants with law enforcement experience. These applicants must be current, full-time, certified law enforcement officers with at least two years of certified service OR be out of law enforcement no more than one year, with at least two years prior certified service as a law enforcement officer. The lateral is typically a shorter academy. Basic CLEET courses are not required because applicants are already certified. The legal blocks, patrol procedures blocks, and criminal investigations blocks are not covered in the lateral academies because they were already covered in previous training when applicants were certified.

Both academies experience the same level of training in defensive tactics/custody and control, emergency vehicles operations/LEDT, and firearms training.

Trooper Trainee Testing

The written exam (Oklahoma POSSE) is now being offered through Oklahoma Career Tech. Test results are valid for one year.
