Be Wildfire Ready!

Wildfire Evacuation

If a wildfire threatens your area, prioritize personal safety by monitoring local alerts, official sources such as the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management, and resources like the Oklahoma Mesonet’s OK-FIRE webpage for current fire conditions and burn bans.

Wildfire Prevention

Check if there's a burn ban before starting a fire

Oklahoma Forestry Services emphasizes proactive steps to reduce wildfire risks, particularly through creating defensible space around homes and properties in the wildland-urban interface. Homeowners can significantly lower threats with proper maintainence and upkeep.

Current Fire Danger

The Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI) Map, from the Oklahoma Fire Danger Model and Mesonet’s OK-FIRE system, shows statewide drought in litter, duff, and upper soil layers. It ranges from 0 (saturated, no deficit) to 800 (extreme dryness, maximum fuel availability). Higher values indicate greater dead fuel loads and wildfire potential, especially in growing season, helping assess long-term dryness and fire risk.

The Burning Index (10ft) Map, updated every 15 minutes via Mesonet’s OK-FIRE Hourly Fire Danger Map, shows the Burning Index (BI) value scaled in 10-foot increments from the Oklahoma Fire Danger Model. BI combines spread rate and heat output to estimate flame lengths and wildfire containment difficulty. Higher values signal more intense fire behavior and control challenges.
