Governor Stitt Celebrates Win for Accountability and Government Reform

Friday, May 15, 2026

OKLAHOMA CITY (May 15, 2026) - Governor Kevin Stitt today said the final day of the legislative session sent a clear message that Oklahomans are ready for reform, accountability, and consolidation across the state’s more than 400 boards and commissions.

On Sine Die, the Legislature failed to override the Governor’s veto of House Bill 3320, which would have permanently extended 39 boards and commissions by removing their statutory sunset dates.

“Sunset dates exist for a reason,” said Governor Stitt. “They force government to justify its existence, prove its value to taxpayers, and remain accountable to the people. We should not permanently extend boards and commissions without first seeking reform and consolidation. The answer cannot always be more government.”

The Legislature also failed to override the Governor’s vetoes of legislation that would have extended sunsets, without additional reforms, for Oklahoma Educational Television Authority (SB 1461 and HB 3320), several advisory councils for the Department of Environmental Quality (HB 3007), the Oklahoma Advisory Council on Indian Education (HB 3006 and SB 1721), and the Board of Chiropractic Examiners (HB 3003).

“Future leaders have a real opportunity to finish the job,” said Governor Stitt. “Oklahoma does not need hundreds of boards and commissions operating with little accountability to voters. We need a leaner, more efficient government that protects taxpayers, reduces duplication, and ensures every board and commission serves a clear public purpose.”

This session, Governor Stitt signed legislation eliminating 3 boards and commissions, including the Hospital Advisory Council (SB 1423), the Workers’ Compensation Advisory Council (SB 1303), Repeals the Low Carbon Energy Initiative Board (SB1191), Repeals the Health Care Workers and Educators Assistance Program and the Health Care Workforce Resources Act (SB1425) and the Alzheimer-Dementia Disclosure Act Advisory Council (SB1502).

“It is about making government work better for the people who pay for it. We made progress this session, but there is more work to do,” said Gov. Stitt.
