Governor Stitt Applauds Legislative Action to Stop Gas Tax Hike for Oklahomans
OKLAHOMA CITY (May 14, 2026) - Governor Kevin Stitt applauds the State Legislature's rapid action to prepare Oklahomans to benefit should President Donald J. Trump pause the federal gas tax.
Today, both chambers quickly took up HB 1370 to remove an antiquated trigger law that would automatically increase the State gas tax on Oklahomans should the federal gas tax be suspended.
“Should President Trump move to suspend the federal gas tax, Oklahomans will now truly benefit from this relief due to rapid action taken today at the Capitol,” said Gov. Stitt. “I applaud members of my administration who identified this antiquated law, and Republican legislative leaders for acting within 24 hours to protect the President’s America First agenda in Oklahoma.”
HB 1370 removed O.S. 68 Section 500.4A, which directed the State of Oklahoma to increase the state excise on gasoline or diesel in response to the federal government terminating or reducing its excise tax.
