Governor Kevin Stitt announced today he has declared September as Gold Star Family Month in Oklahoma. The Gold Star recognition honors those who have lost a family member in active service with the United States Armed Forces.
“Our Gold Star families deserve to be recognized and honored for their sacrifice every single day,” said Governor Stitt. “All month long, Oklahomans should take pause to remember our fallen heroes who gave their lives to defend our freedom and the Gold Star families they left behind.”
The Gold Star has officially been recognized as a symbol of loss since 1918, during World War I when American families displayed flags in homes, businesses, schools, and churches with a Gold Star for each loved one lost in military service.
