The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is extending the REAL ID full enforcement date by 19 months, from October 1, 2021 to May 3, 2023, due to circumstances resulting from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Commercial driver licenses (CDLs), commercial learner permits (CLPs), and medical certificates have been extended by FMCSA until May 31, 2021, as long as they were not expired prior to March 1st, 2020.

All drivers are required to have the Traffic Incident Management (TIM) certification in order to become an approved wrecker driver.

However, there is not a specific class requirement for the four (4) credit hours of continued education each driver must have each year. The continued education portion can be formal lectures, courses, seminars, webinars, videos or any other similar type of educational program designed to educate an individual and give him or her further skills or knowledge to be applied in his or her line of work.
