Monday, March 16, 2026

The Oklahoma Department of Corrections proudly announces that Lt. Tyler Gaines was selected as the winner of the Bronze Medal of Honor by One Voice United, a national organization that recognizes extraordinary courage, service and professionalism among corrections professionals.

The National Medal of Honor program from One Voice United is the premier national awards ceremony celebrating uniformed and civilian professionals in corrections who go above and beyond the call of duty. Winners are nominated by peers or departments and selected through a committee of current and former corrections professionals. Three Medal of Honor awards are given annually. This year, 94 professionals from 24 states were nominated.

Lt. Gaines earned this distinguished recognition for his heroic actions while off duty in Hominy, Okla. In September 2025, Gaines witnessed a Hominy Police Officer struggling with a violent suspect who was attempting to gain control of the officer’s firearm. Without hesitation, Gaines intervened, helping to neutralize the threat and safeguard fellow law enforcement, an act that exemplifies courage, quick thinking and an unwavering commitment to public safety.

Lt. Tyler Gaines receives a certificate from Chief of Operations Jason Sparks and Dick Conner Correctional Center Warden Scott Tinsley for winning the Bronze National Medal of Honor.

“Tyler’s willingness to step into danger to protect another first responder reflects the very best of our profession and this national honor is well deserved,” said ODOC Director Justin Farris. “I’m extremely proud of all our officers and this highlights the selfless dedication they demonstrate every day to protecting public safety and making Oklahoma stronger.”

Lt. Gaines will be honored at the One Voice United National Medal of Honor awards ceremony in Atlantic City, N.J., on May 1, 2026.
