Body scanner proves its value on first day at Allen Gamble

Wednesday, August 19, 2026

A newly installed body scanner at Allen Gamble Correctional Center went into operation Wednesday and immediately demonstrated its value when two visitors were caught attempting to bring contraband into the facility.

The scanner is one of five full-body scanners installed by the Oklahoma Department of Corrections at strategic locations across the state as part of a phased rollout to strengthen facility security and prevent contraband from entering correctional facilities.

During visitation Wednesday, two visitors attempted to enter Allen Gamble Correctional Center with contraband concealed on their persons. Before being scanned, one visitor asked about the body scanner and then removed a package concealed in her bra. A second visitor repeatedly failed to remain still during the scan and ultimately removed a package concealed in her pants.

The packages contained wax, soaked paper, tobacco and a white powder. Both women were arrested.

“This is exactly why we implemented the body scanners,” said ODOC Executive Director Justin Farris. “We work diligently to keep contraband out of our facilities to ensure the safety of inmates and staff. Leveraging technology to help our dedicated employees prevent contraband from entering is paramount to our success.”

Today’s events highlight the importance of integrating technology with ODOC employees’ efforts to enhance security. Full-body scanning adds an extra layer of defense by enabling correctional staff to detect hidden items before they enter the facility. The implementation of body scanners demonstrates ODOC’s ongoing dedication to updating security techniques and using technology to ensure safer correctional environments for staff, the public and those in its care.
