Eight years ago, Christie Luther saw an opportunity to change the lives of incarcerated women in Oklahoma. She launched the first cosmetology school inside a prison, sparking hope and transformation for those striving to find their way
“I’m hopeful more will be coming,” Luther said, reflecting on the program’s growth.
Since its inception, nearly 150 women have graduated from the program. Remarkably, none have returned to prison, a testament to the power of second chances and the program's success.
“It’s not just a program,” shared Brandy, a restored citizen and program graduate. Fighting back tears, she added, “I can’t believe I was a person who got to be a part of that program. Miss Luther really is a wonderful person.”
With each graduating class, Luther’s vision of empowering women to reclaim their lives and pursue careers in cosmetology became a reality.
“Here we grow,” Luther said proudly.
Her mission has now expanded. Luther recently opened a cosmetology school for incarcerated men, bringing her life-changing initiative to a new audience.
“Man, to see them win, to see them succeed,” Luther said. “We guarantee job placement and provide their tools. Just to see the hope in their faces – it means everything. We are hope dealers.”
Each day, these men are transported from a community corrections facility to the school, where they dive into the art of cosmetology and barbering.
“I prayed about it and asked God to show me something,” inmate Eric Cotter said. “Literally that day, there’s the R.I.S.E flier on the prison wall. I immediately knew.”
“I never thought I would be in a position to learn on this level behind bars,” inmate Martel Stevens added.” “It’s such a blessing.”
Every student who steps into Luther’s program begins a new chapter, breaking the cycle of incarceration and building a future filled with hope and opportunity.
“I realize the call on my life is just to help people,” Luther said. “I’m just privileged to get to see that.”
