ODOC Director Steven Harpe to resign Sept. 30

Wednesday, August 27, 2025

Today, Oklahoma Department of Corrections Executive Director Steven Harpe announced his resignation from the agency, effective Sept. 30, 2025, to take a position in the private sector. He was appointed as director by Governor Kevin Stitt on Oct. 13, 2022.

"When I came into office, I made it a priority to bring in leaders from outside of state government who could bring fresh ideas and challenge the status quo. Director Harpe came from the private sector, stepped into public service, and for six years gave his all to the people of Oklahoma," said Governor Stitt. "Director Harpe’s leadership transformed the culture at ODOC, making the agency stronger and better prepared to fulfill its mission of protecting Oklahomans and supporting rehabilitation. I’m grateful for his service to our state and wish him the very best as he returns to the private sector."

During Director Harpe’s tenure with ODOC, he championed a more rehabilitation-focused approach to corrections by creating a compassionate environment that transforms the lives of those in the agency’s care. After changing ODOC’s vision statement to “We Change Lives,” Director Harpe spearheaded monumental innovation by incorporating that ethos into every decision, ensuring the agency’s work builds a stronger Oklahoma.

With a lengthy background working in the tech sector, Director Harpe brought his experience and approached corrections operations with a different mindset. Through numerous projects, he drove innovation and modernization, improving processes and creating efficiencies for not only employees but also the inmates.

“I’m extremely proud of my time with ODOC and the State of Oklahoma,” said Director Harpe. “Working with the dedicated employees at the agency and interacting with the inmates, learning their stories, is an experience I will cherish forever. I know the agency will continue to innovate and be at the forefront of modernizing the corrections profession.”

Oklahoma is leading the nation in innovative rehabilitative advances. Building on this momentum, Governor Stitt named Chief of Staff Justin Farris as interim director. Farris has worked closely alongside Director Harpe to drive the many modernizations within the agency.

ODOC remains committed to its mission of transforming lives with compassion and protecting the public. The transition in leadership will not affect the agency’s ongoing initiatives or dedication to public safety.
