A quick-thinking corrections officer prevented a potential tragedy Thursday, Sept. 25, when an Oklahoma Department of Corrections bus driver suffered a medical emergency while transporting 13 inmates. The bus driver had a medical issue while driving along Interstate 35, prompting quick action from Cpl. Justin Black, who was also on board.
“I looked up and he was on the floor,” Black said. “I jumped up and stopped the bus.”
Without hesitation, Black took control of the situation by taking the wheel and safely guiding the bus to the side of the road. Thanks to his quick thinking and decisive actions, none of the inmates suffered serious injuries during this alarming incident.
“This incident highlights the bravery and quick response of Cpl. Black. His actions not only prevented a potential disaster but also demonstrated his dedication to keeping others safe," said Hasbell. “The inmates on board were very concerned for the officer and thanked Cpl. Black for doing a good job.”
Along with safely stopping the bus, Black quickly provided medical aid to the driver and called 911 for additional help. His professionalism ensured everyone's safety and demonstrated the highest standards of courage and duty.
Authorities responded quickly and took the driver to a nearby hospital for assessment.
“Cpl. Black’s actions are a true example of professionalism under pressure,” said ODOC Chief of Operations Jason Sparks. “His quick thinking protected lives and prevented what could have been a tragic outcome. This is the kind of dedication and courage we are proud to see from our staff.”
This incident serves as a reminder of the critical role ODOC staff play in ensuring safety and security, both inside and outside correctional facilities. The agency commends Cpl. Black for his decisive actions, which reflect ODOC’s core values of service, courage and honor.
