Oklahoma Department of Corrections employees deliver Christmas gifts to local children

HODGEN, OKLA. – Staff members from Jim E. Hamilton Correctional Center in Hodgen, Okla., are bringing Christmas joy to children in southeast Oklahoma.

“We had a little girl last year who cried,” Warden Randy Harding said. “You mean I get to keep this?”

For the last two years, they’ve collected donations and purchased gifts for deserving students.

This year, employees hand-delivered 16 bicycles and Samsung tablets to children in the Hodgen, Heavener, Wister and Howe school districts.

“I like it very much,” recipient Hunter said. “Blue is actually my favorite color.”

“Anyone that’s involved with our kids to make sure they have the best education possible, not only through bookwork but making sure their Christmas is great, that’s a great partnership to have in my mind,” Hodgen School Superintendent Dennis Shoup said.

The students were selected by their teachers as top citizens of each school.

“He’s so excited,” teacher Jami Nobles said. “We let him take it for a spin and all the kids watched him ride it.”

The employees at Jim E. Hamilton are also launching a coat drive for children in Southeast Oklahoma. Last year they gathered and donated more than 100 coats to needy kids.
