Reality TV star retrieves dog from prison

Tuesday, August 04, 2020

McLOUD, Okla. – In “dog years” Thor has been away from his family a long time. But now, this giant English Mastiff is heading home.

“Until we pulled our masks down, he didn’t recognize us,” Chris Hammons said. “And then he was like, oh, I know you.”

For the last month, Thor has been attending obedience school inside Mabel Bassett Correctional Center. The Guardian Angels program pairs inmates, like Kimberly, with animals for intensive training.

“he’s going to be blast,” Kimberly told us last month.

The trainers have had a 100% success rate with their students. Thor was no exception.

Chris Hammons understands adversity. He played on OU’s last national championship football team, and appeared on Survivor and Amazing Race. The biggest obstacle was overcoming the incarceration of his father.

That’s the reason he has so much compassion for the underdogs.

“Kimberly and all the people at Mabel Bassett did a really good job,” Hammons said.

Kimberly is already onto the next challenging canine, grateful for families like the Hammons, who look beyond the crime and see someone of value.
