OCI instrumental in furnishing new Oklahoma Insurance Department

Friday, February 07, 2020

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – New year, new building. The Oklahoma Insurance Department is moving to this three story, 35,000 square foot facility on NE 50th. And most of the furnishings were provided by Oklahoma Correctional Industries.

OCI employs roughly 1200 Department of Corrections inmates. They work in furniture factories, upholstery shops and metal fabrication plants in prisons statewide.

Furnishing the Insurance Department was a massive undertaking. OCI furnished 40 offices, constructed 100 cubicles, and assembled 800 pieces of furniture using inmate labor. “This project is a great example of what we can do, between our fabrication, module office and sales representatives,” Matthew Orton said.

Oklahoma Correctional Industries is in the business of providing great products at reasonable prices. In fact, the agency offers thousands of goods and services for state and local government, non-profits and charitable organizations. It’s a significant tax savings to the public, while providing offenders with marketable job skills. Orton said, “Having a trade that they can work with gives them the confidence to adjust on e they get out.”

The partnership between the Oklahoma Insurance Department & OCI is another shining example of cooperation and commitment to save Oklahomans money while investing in offenders, eager for new opportunities.
