MCLOUD, Okla. – There is a movement underway at Mabel Bassett Correctional Center. Ironing, cutting and sewing, the inmates are answering a national cry for help by making protective masks.
“It’s sad it takes something like this to bring everyone together. But it’s so wonderful to see when it happens.” Captain Clint Bennett said.
Captain Bennett oversees the “Warriors Quilting Club.” It’s a team of women who share a love for sewing.
In the midst of a viral pandemic and dwindling supply of personal protective equipment, these women are using their skills to help fill a critical need. They’re among the scores of people answering pleas from first responders, hospitals, and nursing homes for face masks.
Hobby Lobby donated a mountain of fabric. These women were eager to contribute their time and effort.
“It means a lot to me to give back to the community, inmate Kelsey Dodson said. “We are showing that we are more than just a number and we genuinely care about the community.”
Not only are they sewing masks, the inmates pray over each one – that they’ll create a layer of protection from an invisible enemy.
“I absolutely pray over them while I’m working. Prayer is an important part of my life,” Inmate Debra Franks said. “This is a duty and a service and a way to give back.”
They have the fabric and a heart to help. It’s a potentially life saving ministry, from a patchwork of improbable heroes.
