OKEMAH, Okla. -- On Oct. 5, 2018, Probation and Parole Officer Robert Lang was traveling along Interstate 40 to the Probation and Parole Services Division Office in Oklahoma City to pick up his commission card when he spotted a traffic accident that had just happened between a dump truck and a passenger van.
Noticing no first responders were in sight, without hesitation he pulled over to help. A severely injured man was lying on the ground near the van, his leg mangled and unable to walk. He pulled him to safety away from the burning van, then helped the other occupants, who, it turned out, were law enforcement officers from the National Nuclear Security Administration headed back from training at Camp Gruber in Braggs.
He immediately helped them from the burning vehicles then went back to remove firearms and ammunition from the fiery wreckage before rounds started exploding, putting everyone in mortal danger.
Because of his immediate and heroic efforts before first responders could arrive, four seriously injured passengers survived their injuries.
