JDCC employee saves inmate from suicide attempt

Wednesday, November 27, 2019

TAFT, Okla. -- Dustin Chalk earned ODOC’s Life Saving Award for his actions on March 11, 2019, at Jess Dunn Correctional Center.

He was on his normal tour of B-Unit at JDCC when he heard a shower running in the inmate bathroom. Suspicious of the sound, he went to investigate and found an inmate had severely cut his wrists and the inside of his elbow.

He had bled so much he was nearly dead. He immediately grabbed the inmate’s shirt he was wearing, pulled it off him, and used it as a tourniquet to limit further bleeding. Then, he radioed for assistance, and fellow staff responded immediately. His quick response and ability to triage the wounds saved the inmate’s life.
