The 2024 Summer Reading theme is Adventure Begins at Your Library : La Aventura Comienza en tu BibliotecaAdventure (Juana Martinez-Neal & Rob Donnelly)

This summer, libraries across Oklahoma will be offering various programs and reading incentives centered around the theme of Adventure for 2024. These initiatives are designed to engage readers of all ages, encouraging them to explore new worlds and stories through books and activities. Expect a variety of events such as storytime sessions, book clubs, reading challenges, and creative workshops, all aimed at fostering a love for reading and adventure.

These programs provide a structured and engaging way for individuals, especially children and teenagers, to stay intellectually active during the long break from school. By offering incentives such as prizes and rewards, libraries motivate participants to explore a diverse range of books and topics, expanding their knowledge and stimulating their imagination.

Additionally, summer reading programs help combat the "summer slide," the tendency for students to lose academic skills and knowledge over the summer months. By encouraging regular reading habits and providing access to a wide array of resources, libraries empower individuals to develop essential literacy skills that are fundamental for success in school and beyond. Furthermore, these programs often serve as community hubs, bringing people together through shared literary experiences and fostering a sense of belonging and connection. Overall, summer reading programs at public libraries play a vital role in promoting lifelong learning and enriching communities. Check with your local library for specific details and schedules.

Start your adventure!

Free Admission to the Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Gardens!

ODL and local libraries are once again partnering with the OKC Zoo and OG&E on the Read for Adventure summer reading promotion. When a family checks out the book Juniper’s Butterfly Garden, they will receive a voucher redeemable for FREE admission to the Oklahoma City Zoo for four people (child, adult, or senior). The voucher is good through June 30, 2024. Check to see if your library is offering this opportunity!

Local libraries use materials and program ideas developed by the Collaborative Summer Library Program to help keep thousands of Oklahoma children reading and discovering during their summer vacation months. ODL's Youth Services Department assists in getting these materials to libraries across the state.

Oklahoma’s Statewide Summer Reading Program is sponsored by local libraries, local partners, the Oklahoma Department of Libraries, and the Institute of Museum and Library Services
