Basic Purpose

Positions in this job family are responsible for operating mobile and stationary equipment, operating/driving trucks, ten wheel dump, semi-tractor trailers and large off road dump trucks for the purpose of hauling all types of building materials and transporting electrical equipment and large heavy equipment.

Typical Functions

The functions performed within this job family will vary by level, but may include the following:

  • Operates large mobile equipment, such as Caterpillar style bulldozers, scrapers, and excavators.
  • Operates large dump truck and various other equipment to transport material.
  • Performs safety inspection on trucks and heavy equipment.
  • Performs lockout/tag out safety procedures to isolate equipment for work by maintenance personnel.
  • May provide training to fellow employees.
  • Performs various duties around electrical power generation and transmission facilities (hydro dams, waterways, coal fire facility, and high voltage lines).

Level Descriptors

The Power Generation Hydro Special Equipment Operator job family has four levels based on the complexity of assignments and type of equipment operated and responsibility for supervision.

Level I: Code: Q40A Salary Band: J

Employees at this level serve in a training capacity under close supervision of a skilled operator.  Incumbents will perform only the more routine tasks.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include ability to read, interpret and carry out complex written or oral instructions.  Must be capable to do mechanical repairs such as hydraulic lines and leaks, replace cutting edges, etc.  Must be able to do safety inspections on all equipment.

Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of two years of experience in the operations of large equipment.

Level II: Code: Q40B Salary Band: K

At this level employees perform work involved in the operation and maintenance of equipment.  Employees may train subordinate employees.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include knowledge large equipment; of care and upkeep of mechanical devices and machinery and of safety procedures used in the handling and storage of coal.  Ability is required to operate all machinery and equipment. Must be capable to do mechanical repairs such as hydraulic lines and leaks, replace cutting edges, etc.  Must be able to do safety inspections on all equipment.

Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of those identified in Level I plus one additional year of experience in the operation of large equipment.

Level III: Code: Q40C Salary Band: L

At this level employees perform the entire range of the operations and maintenance of all material handling equipment.  Employees at this level are responsible for training other personnel.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of operation and maintenance of various types of equipment; of safety procedures as they apply to the basic mechanical principles.  Ability is required to operate and maintain stationary and mobile electrical and hydro machinery and equipment; and to train personnel. Must be capable to do mechanical repairs such as hydraulic lines and leaks, replace cutting edges, etc.  Must be able to do safety inspections on all equipment.

Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of those identified in Level II plus one additional year of experience in the operation of large equipment.

Level IV: Code: Q40D Salary Band: N

At this level employees may perform work as a lead worker or in a full supervisory capacity.  Employees supervise the operations for an entire shift.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include those identified in Level III plus knowledge of supervisory practices and procedures; and of record keeping and inventory procedures.  Ability is required to plan work schedules; to supervise and coordinate the work of subordinates; to make independent decisions; and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Must be capable to do mechanical repairs such as hydraulic lines and leaks, replace cutting edges, etc.  Must be able to do safety inspections on all equipment.

Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of those identified in Level III plus one additional year of experience in the operation of large equipment.

Special Requirements

Some positions may require shift work on rotating basis, including nights, weekends and holidays as called upon to staff 24/7 electric generating plant.

Some positions may require a Class A CDL.
