Oklahoma School for the Deaf students score in Academic Bowl

Sulphur, Okla.  — Oklahoma School for the Deaf students earned honors in the Great Plains Schools for the Deaf Academic Bowl competition held online November 1 through 4th.

In the American Sign Language category, three OSD students took top awards: Shakayla Simmons - 1st in ASL Poetry;  Chelsea Martin - 2nd in ASL Handshape; and Makenna Fleshman - 3rd in ASL Storytelling.

Those earning honors for OSD in the high school oratorical division were two 3rd place winners, Hannah Dunn and Peyton Steele.

OSD Academic team members, Hannah Dunn, RyJan Reininger and Landen Fewel were ranked fifth In the competition.

OSD coaches Naomi Woodall, Jamie Wilson, Miranda Pollard and Kelsey Jones were proud of the students' GPSD Academic Bowl performance in the single elimination competition.

"They did a fantastic job!, Coach Kelsey Jones said. "Now, we are working and practicing harder for Gallaudet University's Regional Academic Bowl in February 2022."

Oklahoma School for the Deaf is a deaf education immersion school that offers an academic environment with high standards for Deaf and hard-of-hearing students. In 2020, 112 students attending OSD communicated using American Sign Language and English. As the Statewide Resource Center on Deafness, OSD provided 29,428 direct outreach services to students who attend other public schools, their families and educators.
