Monday, November 18, 2019

MUSKOGEE, Okla. – Oklahoma School for the Blind Teacher Tera Webb from Tahlequah recently won the Adapted Physical Education Teacher of the Year award from the Oklahoma Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.

Adapted PE modifies activities to make them equally appropriate with students with and without disabilities.

Webb, who has taught at OSB for 20 years, became an OAHPERD member when she was a college student.

She drives from her home in Tahlequah to work at OSB, which is headquartered in Muskogee.

OSB is the statewide resource for the education of blind and visually impaired students. Residential and commuter students meet all state-mandated education requirements and receive specialized instruction in Braille, orientation and mobility, optimum use of low vision, adaptive equipment technology and tactile graphic skills that are not available at many public schools in the state. OSB also provides free evaluations, consultations and outreach services for students attending local public schools, their families and local school educators.

OSB is a division of the Oklahoma Department of Rehabilitation Services.

“We are so proud of Tera Webb!” Rita Echelle, OSB superintendent, wrote in an email announcing Webb’s award win to DRS staff. “She does a tremendous job with our students.”

“I love my job, my students and our school,” Webb said. “I am blessed to be at OSB and happy to celebrate 20 years with these great kids….”

“Receiving this award has put a fire in me to live up to it,” she said. “And I love that being acknowledged with this award gives Oklahoma School for the Blind a chance to spread the word about our amazing school to those who may not know who we are and what we do.”

OAHPERD will give Webb a zip pullover jacket, a recognition banner for OSB and a $200 gift certificate from US Games.
